Wiccan Finds Hope In Indiana RFRA, Says “Whatever We Want To Do With Marriage, We Can Do”

In the continuing saga of unintended consequences at the hand of Indiana’s new (and recently revised) Religious Freedom Restoration Act (sic, /gag), this is one of my favorite stories so far.

The Daily Beast’s David Freedlander spoke with Dusty Dionne, High Priest and High Summoner of the Aquarian Tabernacle Church of Washington State.

Dionne said, “Many of us believe that love is the law. Though it is not a quote-unquote Wiccan tenet to have polyamorous marriages, it is under Wiccan law that love is the law. Whatever we want to do with marriage we can do. Carte Blanche. If I want to marry a horse, I can marry a horse.”

I find this especially amusing, considering just a couple months ago GOP senator Lindsey Graham was concerned about exactly the same thing at Loretta Lynch’s confirmation hearing, asking, “What is the legal difference between a state — a ban on same-sex marriage being unconstitutional but a ban on polygamy being constitutional?”

Lynch didn’t take the bait, but it seems that while some republican politicians have been using that slippery-slope argument to rail against marriage equality for gays, others (looking at you, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence) have enacted a Religious Freedom Restoration Act that can  actually be used as a justification for gay marriage, so long as the gays are Pagan.

Nice work, Gov. Pence, you’ve left that back door wide open.
